A hazard and operability study (HAZOP) is a structured and systematic examination of a planned or existing process or operation in order to identify and evaluate problems that may represent risks to personnel or equipment, or prevent efficient operation. A HAZOP review also generates an in depth understanding of the process for all participants, leading to a more robust and reliable plant.
A HAZOP review team usually consists of 6 – 10 persons. Depending on the scope and size of the review, it can take anything from 1 day to several weeks. Having a facilitator who is trained in facilitation not only significantly improves the quality of the outcome but will also shorten the duration of the review.
The objectives of the HAZOP Leaders’ course are to develop the skills necessary to organise and lead a HAZOP, develop an awareness of the factors that influence the performance of the HAZOP review team and to challenge existing practices or confirm the status quo at your facility.
Every course attendee will get the opportunity to lead, scribe and critique a workshop HAZOP. The course includes material and workshops which progress towards Unit Standard 27243 (HAZOP Leaders). Unit Standard 27243 will be awarded through a sub-contracting arrangement with NZTI Ltd.
The HAZOP Leaders' course requires some experience with HAZOP to ensure students receive maximum benefits from the course. The HAZOP Leaders' course is based on the assumption students are proficient in HAZOP participation and are wishing to further upskill their HAZOP experience. Pre-requisites for the course include:
